Native American
The Cultural Center is very involved in the Native American community in the area. We have a Ute Mountain Ute case in the museum as well as a Navajo and a Pueblo case. Our Gift Shop is stocked with items we buy direct from the artists that come through our doors. We feature the art of Jerry Cohoe, a Navajo artist, in the Gift Shop. The Art Gallery almost always has several Native American artisans showing. There is a real Navajo Hogan (a Navajo tradional home) outside in the dance plaza area. The two-storey mural on the north wall of the Center is of a Pueblo scene similar to the Taos Pueblo. The seating area in the dance plaza is Kiva style.
Our summer programs are all Native American in nature from dances to cultural programs of sand painting, a WWII Code Talker, flute music, and a One Woman Drama of Navajo and Paiute ancestry. During the fall, winter and spring we have programming surrounding Native Americans, from a talent night, lectures and demonstrations, to Navajo language classes. Southwest Intertribal Voice, a Native American organization that helps with issues for those not living on the reservations has an office in our building. We act as a pass-through for state grants that the tribe cannot apply for directly.
It is our honor to bring the Native American culture to the local community and to the visitor, so that they can better understand our brothers and sisters.
